How Did Most White Southerners View the Practice of Slavery

Reconstruction failed in the United States because white Southerners who were opposed to it effectively used violence to undermine Black political power and force uncommitted white Southerners to their side. Slavery was also our countrys Achilles heel responsible for its near undoing.

. Nonetheless between 1777 and 1804 every Northern state provided for the immediate or gradual abolition of slavery. One hundred and fifty years ago this month the 13th Amendment officially was ratified and with it slavery finally was abolished in America. By 1940 the ASWPL claimed 40000 supporters 249 and by 1937 Gallup polls showed overwhelming white support for anti-lynching.

These tribes were the only Native American groups to formally recognize the institution of African-slavery. Although some southerners owned no slaves at all by 1860 the Souths peculiar institution was inextricably tied to the regions economy and society. Something which they eventually did and this turned out to be one of the most important causes of this war. In the seven cotton states one-third of all white income was derived from slavery.

Torn between the economic benefits of slavery and the moral and constitutional issues it raised white southerners grew more and more defensive of the institution. While the politicians from the Northern states began lobbying for abolition of slavery those from the Southern states opposed it. In 1919 a group of primarily white Southerners formed the anti-lynching Committee on Interracial Cooperation in Atlanta and in 1930 it launched the Association of Southern Women to Prevent Lynching ASWPL. The New York World hailed it. Its up to white people to save.

From the beginning some white colonists were uncomfortable with the notion of slavery. So wholly dependent were white Southerners on the institution that they took up arms against their own to keep African Americans in bondage. The southerners even threatened to secede if the Federal administration took any such step.

No Southern state did so and the slave population of the South continued to grow peaking at almost four million people at the beginning of the American Civil War when most slave states sought to break away from the United States.
